Dr Chris O’Brien MBBS. (Qld.) FRACGP

Dr O’Brien graduated from the University of Queensland in 1974 and after spending two years working at the Princess Alexandra Hospital started the Sunnybank Hills Medical Centre with his wife, Helen at Pinelands Plaza in Sunnybank Hills.
In 1980 Dr O’Brien gained his fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and is vocationally registered.
Dr O’Brien and his wife Helen, built what is now the Sunnybank Hills Medical centre in 1985.
Their vision was to create an on-site multi-health service where patients could be helped with their medical conditions without leaving the centre.  The practice, as a result has now grown to support 13 independent GP’s and many supporting allied health disciplines.
As a result of an interest in teaching new doctors through the general practice training program, Dr. Chris has enabled and encouraged a significant number of doctors into the medical work force.  Some doctors from the training program have decided to remain at the practice permanently once their training period has finished.  Seeing young doctors develop their skills over time has been a very rewarding part of Dr. Chris O’Brien’s practice.

Favourite thing about being a GP

My favourite thing about being a GP is following patients on their journey through life and seeing their young families grow up and have children of their own.  It is not uncommon to be treating 3 generations of the same family at the centre.

Interesting Fact

He had his own business mowing lawns as a medical student.  This sometimes included stripping down motor movers for spare parts and employing an assistant.

Outside of the medical centre I love to play sport, especially tennis, golf, snow skiing and travelling.

Philosophy of Practice

“An effective family doctor is one that protects their patient’s health. This is achieved through intervention when the patient is ill and detection and prevention before the illness is apparent. I believe that high cholesterol, inactivity and men’s health issues such as prostate disease are valid concerns which I find important.”
